- The Times has learned about the attack of giant jellyfish on the coast of Great Britain
Researchers have recorded a record number of giant jellyfish off the coast of Great Britain. This was reported on November 3 by The Times newspaper.
"This year, sightings of giant jellyfish have increased throughout the UK, from Cornwall to the Hebrides," the article says.
It is noted that this type of jellyfish is called Rhizostoma pulmo. It is also called a barrel jellyfish. It can reach almost a meter in width and weigh 35 kg.
According to the Marine Conservation Society, the number of sightings of giant jellyfish in the UK and Ireland has increased by 230%.
"Despite their impressive size, barrel jellyfish are relatively harmless. <...> Their sting is usually too weak to cause serious harm to humans, although those who have found such a jellyfish on the shore are advised to keep their distance from it," the publication clarifies.
According to scientists, changing currents and warmer water attract jellyfish to the north.
On September 25, a member of the Russian Geographical Society, oceanographer Anatoly Tavrichesky, reported that it was impossible to find a villain jellyfish with 20-meter tentacles in the Black Sea, like the one that washed up on the coast of the American state of Texas. This species does not live in these waters. He added that a sea dragon can also be dangerous, it does not kill, but it can sting very painfully.
