US President Donald Trump's decision to resume nuclear testing could trigger an arms race between the nuclear powers, from which China would benefit. This was announced on November 1 by The Japan Times (JT) newspaper, citing experts.

"The only one who will benefit from testing nuclear warheads will be China, because it has not conducted as many tests as Russia and the United States have conducted," Doreen Horschig, a representative of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), quoted the newspaper as saying.

The publication notes that, with the exception of the DPRK, no state has officially conducted nuclear tests over the past three decades, but some countries, including the United States, regularly launch tests of missile delivery systems. Tests of nuclear weapons themselves are conducted using computer simulations.

"The United States is far ahead of Russia and China in terms of the volume of data obtained [based on the results of previously conducted real tests], so at the moment they don't really need them," Horschig explained.

Last year, the Pentagon said that China was advancing in the field of nuclear weapons "faster than expected." Beijing is particularly rapidly increasing its military stocks, namely warheads that are placed on strategic carriers or in storage facilities with operational forces and are ready for use, the newspaper writes.

According to the Stockholm Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), at the beginning of 2025, China had a total of 600 warheads, 576 of which were deployed on carriers and 24 were in storage.

On October 29, Trump posted a statement on his Truth Social network, where he said that he had instructed the Pentagon to begin testing nuclear weapons "on an equal basis." According to the president, the process should begin "immediately." At the same time, earlier that day, Trump refused to answer a question from reporters about the reasons for the start of weapons testing.

On the same day, Trump said that the United States and Russia were negotiating on nuclear disarmament, adding that if successful, China could join the process. The American leader stressed that the process of denuclearization is important for global security, and if progress is made in this area, it can become the basis for further steps in relations with other world nuclear powers.
