The average car loan size in Russia has reached its maximum in a year
In September 2025, the average amount of car loans issued amounted to 1.46 million rubles, an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous month. This is the highest value in the last year, while the average car loan receipt has been growing for the seventh month in a row. This was announced on October 27 by the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI).
Compared to the same period last year, the average amount of car loans issued increased by 1% in September. The largest average amount of car loans issued among the regions was recorded in Moscow (1.96 million rubles), the Moscow Region (1.74 million rubles), as well as in St. Petersburg (1.66 million rubles). The largest increase compared to August was recorded in Volgograd (+6.2%), Kemerovo (+5.3%) and Tula (+5.1%) regions.
As noted by Alexey Volkov, NBKI's marketing director, the average car loan receipt began to decline in the middle of last year after the introduction of macroprudential restrictions. Since March 2025, the indicator has been recovering at a moderate pace against the background of stabilization in the issuance of car loans.
Now, when approving car loans, banks still focus on borrowers with a good credit history and a debt burden of no more than 50%, the specialist noted.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that in September 2025, Russians spent 409.9 billion rubles on the purchase of new cars. This is the highest result in the last 11 months, since November last year. For the first time during this time, the indicator of the financial capacity of the market has exceeded the mark of 400 billion rubles.
