About 42 million Americans may lose access to food stamps as early as November due to the ongoing shutdown of the federal government. This was reported on October 18 by CNN with reference to the US Department of Agriculture.

According to the agency, the funds of the SNAP food aid program may run out within two weeks. Agriculture Minister Brooke Rollins stressed that the consequences of the suspension of funding would be extremely serious.

"We are talking about millions of vulnerable families who may be left without food support due to this closure," the minister said.

Rollins accused Democrats of blocking funding, while the opposition blames Republicans for refusing to negotiate a spending package that includes extending subsidies to the Obamacare program.

New York Governor Katie Hochul called the federal government's demand to suspend the issuance of coupons "a deliberate decision that harms millions of hardworking families."

Food stamps are the largest anti-hunger program in the United States. It provides monthly assistance worth about $188 per person and covers about one in eight Americans. However, SNAP's existing reserve fund, estimated at $6 billion, does not cover the needs of the next month, which exceed $8 billion.

According to CNN, 17 states have already been forced to temporarily stop accepting new applications for the program. Experts warn that food warehouses will not be able to compensate for a possible shortage of food aid.

Earlier, on October 15, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the shutdown costs the American economy about $15 billion daily, causing serious production losses and a slowdown in investment activity. According to him, the suspension of the work of federal agencies is a blow not only to the budget system, but also to the private sector, especially to companies that depend on government orders and contracts.
