The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has charged Alexander Zapesotsky, the suspended rector of the St. Petersburg University of the Humanities of Trade Unions (SPbGUP), with embezzling 74 million rubles for trips abroad and paying bills in restaurants. This became known on October 13.

According to the data reviewed by Kommersant, the rector of St. Petersburg State University spent more than 74 million rubles on foreign trips for him and his family members in two years. In addition, Zapesotsky spent another 20 million rubles on strengthening security.

According to the investigation, in 2023-2024, the university paid its head the rent of an elite cottage in the village of Lisiy Nos on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, as well as the protection of the mansion and his apartment in the center of St. Petersburg. The total cost of such services amounted to more than 21.5 million rubles.

In addition, SPbGUP covered Zapesotsky and his family members the costs of expensive business class tourist flights to France, Monaco and Italy, as well as excursions, restaurants and alcohol.

It is noted that the lawyers of the ex-rector did not comment on this information.

On September 25, the Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region decided to dismiss Zapesotsky from the post of rector of St. Petersburg State University. He was charged with attempts to legalize the illegal seizure of state property through court proceedings against the background of concealing the fact of construction of facilities at the expense of the state.

Later, on October 6, it was reported that the committee of the St. Petersburg State University students' trade union sent an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the dismissal of Rector Zapesotsky and the appointment of Evgeny Lubashev in his place.

On October 11, the Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region granted the claim of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and decided to seize the academic building, dormitory and other buildings of the St. Petersburg University of the Humanities of Trade Unions from illegal possession.
