Popular superfoods have valuable nutritional properties, but they are not a panacea and require a reasonable approach to consumption. Elena Konovalova, a nutritionist, told Izvestia about this on October 14.

According to the expert, the scientific term "superfood" does not exist — it is a marketing name for products with a high concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

The specialist noted that superfoods can improve health only as part of a comprehensive system that includes sports, proper sleep and a balanced diet. Among the most useful products, the nutritionist identified spirulina, which contains up to 60% protein, which exceeds its amount in most types of meat. These microalgae are rich in iron, B vitamins, and antioxidants, which help control cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation.

"Chia seeds have equally valuable properties, which, when in contact with liquid, form a gel useful for digestion. Due to the content of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and fiber, they support heart health, normalize blood sugar levels and help control appetite," Konovalova said.

Traditional Japanese matcha tea contains powerful antioxidants catechins and L-theanine, which promotes concentration and a mild invigorating effect without sudden energy surges.

The expert paid special attention to fermented foods that enrich the diet with probiotics and vitamins A, C, and K. Their regular use improves digestion, strengthens the immune system, and even supports emotional health due to the connection between the state of the intestine and the nervous system.

Konovalova emphasized that aggressive marketing is often hidden behind the bright advertisements of superfoods. These foods should be considered as an addition to the diet, not its basis.

With a wrong lifestyle, fast food diet and lack of physical activity, no superfoods will have a significant effect. However, with a healthy diet and moderate physical activity, they can become a valuable element of a healthy lifestyle.

Earlier, on October 4, nutritionist Veronika Gusakova warned about the presence of hidden sugar in popular "healthy" foods. According to her, manufacturers most often use many synonyms to hide the addition of sugar — agave syrup, fruit juice concentrate, maltodextrin, cane juice, coconut sugar.
