Lawyers for Luigi Nicholas Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, have asked a New York federal judge to dismiss some of the charges in the case, including one that could lead to the death penalty. The Associated Press (AP) reported this on October 11, citing documents filed by the lawyers.

"Luigi Mandijon's lawyers on Saturday appealed to a federal judge in New York with a request to drop some criminal charges," the publication says.

In documents filed in Manhattan federal court, the lawyers stated that it was impossible to use Mangione's testimony and evidence from his backpack, which were obtained without a warrant. In addition, the lawyers noted that the accused was not read his rights before the interrogation.

It is clarified that Mangione also pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges.

The murder of the chief executive officer of the American insurance company UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, became known on December 4, 2024. The man was standing near the hotel where the investor conference was to be held when an unknown person fired several shots at the director.

Later, on December 9, law enforcement officers managed to detain Luigi Mangione. On April 1 of this year, ABC reported that Mangione was facing the death penalty.
