In Murmansk, the construction of a two-level interchange on the 20th km of the highway access to Severomorsk as part of the R-21 Kola highway was completed ahead of schedule. This was reported on Wednesday, October 1, by the Bi-port news agency with reference to the Federal State Budgetary Institution Updor Cola.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 4, when Murmansk will celebrate the City Day. The opening of the new interchange will mark the completion of the second stage of reconstruction of the section of the highway leading to the city of Severomorsk from the 14th to the 19th km.

The reconstruction of the highway began in the spring of 2021, and its first stage was completed in the fall of 2023. The construction of the interchange itself started in 2023.

"As a result of the work carried out, a modern semi—ring road has been created from the eastern side of the capital of the Arctic: a high-speed four-lane highway of the first category with separation of oncoming traffic by a power barrier fence," reported FCU Updor Cola in late August.

Several transport interchanges, bridges and overpasses have been built on the highway. Above-ground and underground pedestrian crossings have been equipped, and lighting has been installed.

The implementation of the large-scale project has already significantly relieved the Murmansk road network, the road administration noted.
