France is working to modernize the country's nuclear doctrine. This was announced on October 1 by French leader Emmanuel Macron.

"I am currently working on updating our doctrine and would like to continue deepening our strategic dialogue with the Europeans who want it," he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper.

In addition, Macron also announced the presence of the French nuclear umbrella. He specified that in early 2026 he would deliver a speech with a plan on the nuclear doctrine.

In March, Macron announced that he intended to discuss the use of nuclear weapons in order to protect the entire European Union. He also called on countries to provide themselves with the largest amount of military equipment and build up their defense capabilities "for the sake of peace itself."
