Folk signs for September 27: what can and cannot be done
In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Saturday, September 27, and which church holidays are celebrated on this day.
Folk signs for September 27, 2025
In Russia, on September 27, Vozdvizheniy Day, or Kapustnitsa, was celebrated. The holiday served as a boundary between Indian summer and the first autumn frosts, or, as they used to say in the old days, winter frosts, which marked the final onset of autumn. "The Exaltation has come — a caftan with a fur coat is measured," people said, noticing the imminent onset of winter.
There are many customs and traditions associated with the holiday. At that time, cabbage pies were prepared in the villages and cabbage was chopped for winter preparations. The youth organized "cabbage evenings", more like a viewing party. It was on such evenings that boys and girls looked for a mate. There was a belief that if a girl, going to gatherings, reads a special plot seven times, then the guy she likes will reciprocate.
During the change of seasons, great importance was attached to weather signs. They were used to judge the weather not only in the coming days, but also for months. So, if cranes are slowly circling in the sky on September 27, then winter will be delayed, and autumn will be long and warm.
Other signs of the day:
- if a cold wind blows on this day, the next summer will be dry.;
- The red moon has risen in the sky, leading to clear weather without precipitation.;
- There are no migratory birds in sight — winter will come earlier than usual and it will be snowy.;
- If the rowan tree sheds its berries, the winter will be windy and cold.;
- the cat looks out the window all day — a strong wind will rise;
- the weather turned out to be warm and sunny — the heat will last until the Cover.
What not to do on September 27
On Vozdvizheniye Day, the peasants adhered to certain prohibitions in order to avoid trouble. For example, it was forbidden to keep the door open, both at the entrance and inside the house. It was believed that with the onset of cold weather, snakes could crawl into the dwelling. Strict fasting is also observed on this day. Therefore, you can not eat meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and cook in butter.
What else can not be done on September 27:
- planning important things and doing needlework — it was believed that this could ruin your health.;
- to go into the forest, especially alone — the ancestors believed that evil spirits awoke there at this time.;
- swimming in rivers and lakes — you can catch a fever and stay sick until winter.;
- Unmarried girls are supposed to eat potatoes, otherwise they will spend another year as girls.
What is the church holiday on September 27th?
On September 27, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-giving Cross of the Lord. This day is one of the twelve most important Orthodox holidays, which includes strict fasting. The history of the celebration dates back to the fourth century and is associated with the name of Equal-to-the-Apostles Queen Elena, mother of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great.
She traveled to the holy places in Jerusalem and during her mission found the Cross of the Lord near Golgotha, where the Savior was crucified. Many Christians flocked to the place. So that everyone could worship the shrine, Patriarch Macarius of Jerusalem began to raise it high Cross. Hence the name of the holiday. Later on the same date, another event began to be celebrated — the return of the Cross from Persian captivity, where the relic spent 14 years.
On the same date, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Repose of St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople and theologian, who is revered as one of the three Ecumenical hierarchs and teachers of the Church, along with Saints Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian. John spent the last years of his life in exile. He went to the Lord in 407, being already very ill and exhausted. In 438, his relics were transferred to Constantinople.

Prayer for the Exaltation
"O All-honorable and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, sanctified by the blood of Christ our God! You are the sign of victory against our enemies, visible and invisible. You will appear to them at the hour of the Terrible Judgment of Christ. I humbly bow down to you, I honestly touch and kindly kiss you, offering my present prayer to Him who was Crucified on you, so that by His power He may heal me from all my ailments of the soul and body, and preserve me from enemies visible and invisible, and place me at His right hand without condemnation at His Judgment. Holy, Life-giving Cross! I saved you, dying for the sins of men who died, let out My spirit like a man, and let out blood and water, and these three are one, which is more than all needed, to save us, to the glory of the fountain of living waters of God the Father, to Myself, from the virgin blood of the incarnate God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit O quickener of the human spirit, glorify them three times in one Godhead, and help me from the water of baptism, received through immaculate faith, but in communion with the Flesh and Blood of the Lord with an unfathomable hope, and in repentance with a contrite spirit, and with an unfeigned love, so that not only in this deplorable life, like fleeting water, but also in the future blessed life I will glorify the Lord, through the aid of thy power, on the blessed Cross, and I will worship Him with the very sight of faith, and with obsession, and with pleasure, beloved, one in the Trinity, glorified for ever and ever. Amen to that."

You have accepted many and various gifts from the Lord, and, as a good and faithful servant, you have multiplied all the talents given to you in a good way: for this you have truly been a universal teacher, for every age and every rank learns from you. You are the image of obedience to the youth, the luminary of chastity to the young, the mentor of diligence to the husband, the teacher of kindness to the old, the rule of abstinence to the monk, the inspired leader to those who pray, the enlightener to those who seek wisdom, the enlightener to those who seek wisdom, the inexhaustible source of the living word, the star of mercy to those who do good, the wise image to those who rule, the truth A zealot is an inspirer of boldness, a mentor of patience for the persecuted for the sake of truth: you were everything to everyone, that you might save everyone. But over all these you have acquired love, which is the essence of perfection, and by that divine power you have combined all your gifts in one person, and you have preached to all the faithful the reconciling love divided between them. But we sinners <...> fall down to you, holy one of God, overcome by strife, and in contrition of heart we ask: through your prayers, drive out from our hearts all pride and envy that divide us, so that we may be one church body in many, so that we may love each other according to your prayerful word and experience the Father and the Son with one mind. and of the Holy Spirit, the Trinity Consubstantial and Indivisible, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
