- A military expert called the EU's statement on the creation of a "drone wall" a PR campaign
The European Union (EU) is overstepping all reasonable bounds by talking about creating a "drone wall" on NATO's eastern border. This opinion was expressed by a military expert, retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk, in an interview with Izvestia on September 26.
"They invent things that are almost impossible to invent. Some kind of dome, then millions of drones to Ukraine, then millions of ammunition. I believe this is nothing more than a simple declaration of some intentions, a PR campaign. <...> I think that we should perceive all this through the prism of wishlist, which is almost impossible to implement," he clarified.
According to Matviychuk, the EU has neither the money nor the industrial capacity to start producing such a large number of technical means.
In addition, the specialist drew attention to the fact that Russia has already introduced industrial production of drones in various areas.: tactical, medium, heavy. As for the EU, according to Matviychuk, they are only at the beginning of this path.
It is also important that some EU countries do not agree to participate in the implementation of this initiative. Accordingly, a kind of "hole in space" is formed, which also indicates the unreality of such solutions.
"Once again, I am inclined to believe that this is nothing more than political PR to appease its population. <...> This is not feasible. Not only economically, but also technically [from a point of view]. It will be necessary to produce electromagnetic compatibility, echelons. These will be invoices for civil aviation, military aviation, and air defense, which will have to live through all of this. These are huge technical problems," the military expert noted.
On September 19, Norbert Roettgen, a deputy from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), a member of the ruling coalition of Germany, announced the need to create a "wall of drones" along the entire eastern border of NATO. At the same time, Roettgen does not support the idea of fighting drones in Ukrainian airspace, as this would mean using NATO weapons outside the bloc's territory.
