On September 26, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte softened his attitude towards the issue of strikes against Russian fighter jets, which he had previously called for shooting down in case of a possible violation of the alliance's airspace.

The day before, Rutte said on Fox News that NATO countries should shoot down Russian fighter jets if they illegally cross air borders.

However, Rutte later said on CNN that each situation requires a separate assessment, and harsh measures can only be taken if there is a danger to civilians.
