In the urban district of Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, archaeologists have discovered the Majiabang Cultural city, one of the oldest prehistoric settlements in China. Its age is approximately 6 thousand years. This is the first confirmation of the existence of cities of this period in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This was reported on September 26 by the Xinhua news agency.

The head of the archaeological expedition, Zhou Rongkeng, suggested that the city had two defensive walls and deep ditches. The plot plan has the shape of a rounded square, with the inner walls and the moat surrounding them forming a completely enclosed complex. Given the age of the finds, we can confidently say that this is one of the earliest cities in China.

According to archaeologists, ceramics with an admixture of red sand were found in the moats, as well as ornaments made of red pottery typical of the Majiabang culture. During the excavations, household items and ceramic products, such as vessels and bowls, decorated with ornaments typical of this culture, were discovered.

In addition, the study identified more than 140 burials from the Songjie culture period. These graves contain many valuable items such as jade and stone products, indicating the high status of those buried.

The archaeologists noted that this discovery has great historical value, as it helps to better understand the formation of Chinese civilization and its early achievements in architecture and the organization of urban life.

National Geographic magazine reported on September 19 that a group of archaeologists led by Dr. Kathleen Martinez has discovered traces of an ancient sunken port in Egypt, which may help in the search for the tomb of Queen Cleopatra.
