An accident involving a freight train occurred in the Smolensk region. After a collision with a truck at a railway crossing, more than a dozen wagons derailed and fuel tanks caught fire. How the accident happened

• The accident occurred on September 26 at approximately 7:26 a.m. Moscow time. The incident occurred at a railway crossing at the 439th km stop in the village of Ryzhikovo. This is a section of the Moscow Railway that connects Smolensk and Vitebsk in Belarus. At this point, the railway intersects the federal highway P120.

• The Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Moscow region reported that an unidentified driver was driving a heavy truck with a trailer and was moving from Smolensk towards the city of Rudnya. He drove through a railroad crossing at a forbidding semaphore signal. This led to a collision with a locomotive carrying 36 freight wagons.

Consequences of an accident

• As a result of the accident, several wagons derailed and six tank cars carrying combustible materials caught fire. Firefighters went to the scene, 40 specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and 10 pieces of equipment participated in the elimination of the fire. To combat the consequences of the accident, fire and recovery trains left.

• Later, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that firefighters had localized the flames on an area of 400 square meters. m. The cars that caught fire were disconnected from the rest, as there was a danger that the fire would spread to the transported lumber. 18 wagons derailed, that is, half of the total train. 16 of them lit up.

Victims of road accidents

• The Moscow Railway said that the locomotive crew was injured in an accident: the driver and his assistant. They were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The driver managed to notice the stopped truck and applied emergency braking, but it was not possible to avoid a collision.

• The truck driver was killed, the Western Interregional Investigative Department for Transport of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported.
