- Apple has threatened the EU with suspending device shipments due to local laws.
On September 24, Apple announced that the introduction of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union (EU) could lead to a deterioration in the quality of user service and the suspension of shipments of certain products to the EU. The corresponding statement is published on the company's website.
"According to the European Commission, according to the DMA, it is illegal for us to share [new] features with Apple users until we add them to other companies' products. If we had shared them earlier, we would have been fined and, possibly, would have been forced to stop supplying our products to the EU," the message says.
According to the company, due to DMA requirements, many features and updates for users in Europe will be delayed, and products will lag behind similar products in other regions.
In its statement, Apple claims that DMA poses new risks to user security and privacy, and leads to reduced choice and quality for consumers. According to Apple, companies are forced to adapt their products to the requirements of European legislation, which requires significant time and resources.
In addition, the corporation notes that DMA leads to a violation of the previous work model, creating unequal conditions for competitors.
"The DMA rules apply only to Apple, despite the fact that Samsung is the leader in the smartphone market in Europe, and Chinese companies are growing rapidly. <...> The DMA singles out Apple, leaving our competitors the freedom to continue [product development], as they have always done," the publication says.
Apple said its teams continue to work on implementing the changes, but without improvements in EU legal requirements, the company's products may become less innovative and competitive for users in Europe. In addition, the IT corporation called on European regulators to review the impact of DMA on the market and on users.
On September 5, US President Donald Trump said that Washington would not leave unanswered the decision of the European Union to fine Google for $ 3.5 billion. According to him, such actions are "unfair" and infringe on the interests of American companies. He also recalled the $17 billion fine previously imposed on Apple and promised to take action.
