Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is going to appeal the decision of the Paris court to imprison him for a period of five years. On September 25, the ex-president stated this immediately after the end of the court session to the French TV channel BFMTV.

"I am innocent. This injustice is a scandal. I won't apologize for something I didn't do. Naturally, I will appeal. Without a doubt, I will have to appear before the Court of Appeal in handcuffs," Sarkozy said.

He also asked French citizens to objectively assess what had happened. According to him, the haters want to humiliate him, but by these actions they only insulted the public image of France.

"I will obey the demands of justice, and if they absolutely want me to sleep in prison, I will sleep there, but with my head held high," the former French president said.

Earlier in the day, a Paris court sentenced former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison in a case involving illegal financing of his election campaign from Libya. The Franceinfo agency clarifies that Sarkozy was also fined 100,000 euros.

At the same time, the former French leader was acquitted of charges of concealing embezzlement of public funds and passive corruption, which includes failure to perform official duties in exchange for material rewards.
