Physical activity after a stroke is not just a recommendation, but a fundamental element of recovery. This contributes to the neuroplasticity of the brain after a stroke and improves myocardial function after a heart attack. Kirill Antonov, senior instructor and methodologist at the Department of Restorative Medicine of JSC Meditsina (Academician Roitberg Clinic), revealed aspects of physical rehabilitation for patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction or stroke in an interview with Izvestia.

Rehabilitation should begin as early as possible, but strictly under medical supervision. After a myocardial infarction, passive movements and breathing exercises are possible as early as 1-3 days, whereas after a stroke, with a stable condition, activation begins in the first 24-48 hours. The specialist emphasizes that the timing is individual and depends on the severity of the patient's condition.

"Safe and effective types of exercise include walking, breathing exercises and cycling exercises on simulators. After a stroke, balance, coordination, and functional exercises that mimic everyday activities are of key importance. However, sudden movements, heavy lifting and static loads should be avoided," Antonov warned.

The increase in intensity should be gradual — no more than 10% per week. The optimal load is determined by the target pulse (50-70% of the heart rate reserve) and subjective sensations on the Borg scale. The key safety criteria are the ability to maintain conversation during exercise and the absence of chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness.

The specialist concludes that physical activity under the supervision of a doctor is a powerful tool for returning to a full life, helping patients regain independence and reduce the risk of recurrent vascular events.

On September 9, cardiologist Ekaterina Pakova named the causes of the formation of cholesterol plaques. So, among the triggers for the development of atherosclerotic plaques, damage to the inner layer of blood vessels due to smoking, high blood pressure or high blood sugar can be mentioned.
