Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said that the Palestinian Hamas movement will not stand in power and must surrender its weapons. He announced this on September 22 during the UN General Assembly conference on the Palestinian issue in New York.

"Hamas will not play any role in the government. He and other factions should hand over their weapons to the Palestinian authority because we want a single unarmed state, a single law, and a single legitimate security force," he said.

He also stressed that Palestine confirms its commitment to holding presidential and parliamentary elections within a year after the end of the conflict, and also intends to draft an interim constitution within three months.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at his weekly cabinet meeting on September 21 that the creation of the State of Palestine threatens Israel's existence. He stressed that the Jewish state would respond to calls for a Palestinian state at a conference of world leaders.
