British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper, at a meeting of the UN Security Council on September 22, announced the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO due to Russia's alleged violation of Estonian airspace.

"We are ready to defend the skies and the territory of NATO. If we need to confront aircraft operating in NATO space without permission, we will do it," the Reuters news agency quoted her as saying.

On September 19, the Estonian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of the fact that three MiG-31 fighter jets allegedly invaded the country's airspace. On the same day, Estonia requested consultations from NATO member countries in connection with the incident. At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry denied the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian aircraft.

Later, on September 22, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the words of the Estonian authorities about Russia's alleged violation of the country's airspace were empty and aimed at exacerbating tensions in the region.
