The doctor warned about the risk of hearing loss in Meniere's disease
Meniere's disease is a non—purulent disease of the inner ear that leads to hearing loss. It is characterized by a violation of the outflow of lymph, which causes an increase in pressure in the inner ear and can lead to complete hearing loss. Alexander Umnov, a lecturer at the Department of Surgery at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia on September 23.
"When the disease occurs, there is a violation of the outflow of lymph, resulting in increased pressure in the inner ear. All this leads to spasm of the eardrum, increased pressure on the auditory ossicles and pain syndrome. The excess of endolymph begins to affect the vestibular nerve, causing dizziness," explained Umnov.
The specialist listed the main symptoms of the disease: periodic attacks of dizziness, headaches, tinnitus and imbalance. It seems to a person that objects are moving around him in space. Tinnitus varies in tone, from the squeak and rustle of leaves to the hum of an engine. Unilateral hearing loss has been noted, which progresses over the course of the disease.
Umnov also noted the association of the disease with autoimmune disorders such as lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as with migraines when the vascular bed is affected. The expert warned that Meniere's disease can lead to complete hearing loss if the pathological process passes to the second ear.
Earlier, on July 23, Stanislav Ionov, Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, named the causes of itching in the ears. He noted that it could be an inflammatory process, a fungal infection, or even otitis media. Itching can also be caused by an insect ingestion or an allergic reaction due to its bite.
