Russian figure skaters Adelia Petrosyan and Peter Gumennik, who won the qualifying tournament for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, must wait for the decision of the special commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow the competition. This was announced on September 21 by the IOC press service.

"The next steps will be carried out in accordance with the decisions of the IOC Executive Committee adopted on September 19," TASS reports.

The Commission for the admission of neutral athletes consists of three people — Nicolas Hovertz from Aruba (Vice-president of the IOC), three-time Olympic basketball medalist Pau Gasol of Spain and President of the International Gymnastics Federation Morinari Watanabe of Japan.

Earlier that day, Humennik won the qualifying tournament in Beijing, thereby securing his place in the 2026 Olympic Games. In the free skate, the skater scored 169.02 points and won the tournament with a total score of 262.82 points based on the results of the two programs.

Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), called Humennik's performance an example of the highest skill. He added that Russian figure skater Adelia Petrosyan had been selected before Humennik, and stressed that now the Russian Federation has two leaders who will defend the honor of the national figure skating school at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan.
