Brazil has refused to invite the United States to the conference "In Defense of Democracy and against Extremism", which will be held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. This was reported on September 20 by CNN Brazil.

According to the source, the decision is explained by the fact that the administration of US President Donald Trump "casts doubt on democracy and elections in Brazil."

"We could not invite a country whose leadership does not recognize the foundations of our state system," the Brazilian official told reporters.

This year, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Kenya, Germany, France and Canada have received invitations. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is also expected to attend the conference.

Earlier, on August 21, it was reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would lead a delegation to attend the 80th UN session. He will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the first time in four years. According to Lavrov, "they will discuss the whole range of issues, both bilateral and multilateral."
