Sky News announced the UK's intention to recognize Palestine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to announce the recognition of Palestine as a state. This was announced on September 20 by Sky News channel.
Starmer previously stated that London would take this step if Israel did not fulfill the conditions for a cease-fire, as well as the rejection of the annexation of the West Bank, the provision of humanitarian supplies and agreement on a long-term peace process.
"We must put an end to the appalling situation in Gaza and resume moving towards sustainable peace," the prime minister stressed.
However, Israel sharply rejected the decision. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Starmer "rewards the monstrous terrorism of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas and punishes its victims."
The UK will join the 147 UN member states that have already recognized Palestine. France, Australia and Canada are also planning to take a similar step ahead of the UN General Assembly.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that about 10 countries intend to announce recognition of an independent Palestinian state without the Hamas movement at the summit before the annual meeting of leaders at the UN General Assembly. A corresponding statement was published on the organization's website on September 12. It was noted that this decision was supported by 142 countries, including Ukraine.
