Axios has learned of Qatar's demand for Israel to resume mediation on Gaza
Qatar may resume its participation in negotiations on a settlement in the Gaza Strip as a mediator, subject to an apology from Israel for the attack on the delegation of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas in Doha. This was reported on September 20 by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"An apology now would be a politically explosive step for Netanyahu and his far—right coalition, but the Qataris understand Israel's political complexity and are willing to be flexible about the wording," the publication says.
The strike on Qatar was the first time that Israeli forces had attacked the Persian Gulf State, which significantly complicated its relations with the countries of the region.
As one Israeli official noted, the scale of the crisis that a strike could cause was clearly underestimated. According to him, the head of state is currently "aware that he has miscalculated."
It is reported that Netanyahu has previously apologized for his military operations. So, in 2013, he apologized to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the murder of Turkish activists during the flotilla raid in Gaza in 2010.
According to the portal, the administration of US President Donald Trump is also interested in reducing the level of tension between Israel and Qatar.
A Hamas negotiating delegation that arrived in the Qatari capital of Doha to discuss a plan proposed by the United States for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip was attacked on September 9. On the same day, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt announced the American leader's attempts to warn Qatar about the impending strikes, which were undertaken too late. United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the Israeli strikes, calling them a blatant violation of Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Trump said on September 15 that he was unaware of Israel's plans to strike Qatar. The American leader noted that Prime Minister Netanyahu had not discussed the Doha attack with him. At the same time, the US president ruled out the possibility of new strikes by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the territory of Qatar. The next day, Netanyahu announced his personal decision to act in Qatar without the participation of the United States.
