The search for Russian swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov, who disappeared in the Bosphorus Strait, has been expanded to the Marmara Sea. This was announced on September 20 by his mother Galina.

"Our lawyer said that the search has expanded to the Marmara Sea," she told RIA Novosti.

According to her, the Red Cross has also joined the search for the missing swimmer. It has not yet been possible to file an international wanted list, the woman added.

Earlier, on September 15, Galina clarified that there are islands in the Marmara Sea, both inhabited and uninhabited. She suggested that the swimmer might be on one of them.

Antonina Svechnikov's wife blamed the organizers of the swim, in which the Russian participated, for his disappearance. She stressed that the organizers did not expand the search area for rescuers, so the family lost valuable time that could have gone to rescue the swimmer.

Svechnikov went missing on August 24. A professional swimmer did not reach the finish line across the Bosphorus in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the athlete disappeared from sight. Honored Master of Sports, world record holder in swimming Nikolai Skvortsov suggested that the man could have been swept away by the current.
