The investigation into the murder of American political activist Charlie Kirk revealed that the crime could have been committed using an antique Mauser 98 rifle made for the military in the 19th century. This was reported on September 20 by NBC News.

According to investigators, the weapon belonged to the suspect's grandfather and did not have a serial number, which made it difficult to track it.

"Simple Mausers can be seen at any gun show for a few hundred dollars," said Scott Svitou, a former employee of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Such rifles are extremely rarely used in crimes, but in the right hands they are capable of accurately hitting targets at a distance of up to 183 m, the article clarifies.

The Kirk case has once again highlighted the gaps in firearms regulation. Experts note that such incidents demonstrate the limitations of the current rules, even after the adoption of the Law on Gun Control in 1968.

Political activist Charlie Kirk died on September 10 after an assassination attempt during his speech at the University of Utah. He played a key role in the victory of the American President Donald Trump in the 2024 elections.

Tyler Robinson, accused of murder, appeared in court for the first time via video link on September 17. It was noted that he was wearing special clothes to prevent possible suicide attempts.
