In Russia, signs and beliefs were given special importance. They were used to determine the weather for the coming days, the time of the beginning and completion of harvesting. The national calendar was full of beliefs and rituals. Izvestia tells about the folk signs of September 21 and the church holidays that fall on this date.

Folk signs for September 21

In Russia, Autumn was celebrated on September 21 — the harvest festival, also known as Pasekin or Lukov Day. In honor of the celebration, large-scale festivities and wide feasts were held in the villages, in which all members of the community participated. One of the main traditions of this day was the production of fire — all the flames in the house were extinguished, and then a new one was lit, striking a spark with flint. It was believed that this would help to update the entire energy system of the house.

On Autumn Days, it was customary to visit the newlyweds. The young husband and wife invited all their relatives and friends to show them their farm. The guests had to praise his wife and give her wise advice, and the host treated everyone to homemade beer.

On September 21, the ancestors paid attention to various signs in order to predict the weather for autumn and winter. It was believed that if birds fly high, the winter will be warm, and if low, it will be cold and snowy.

Other signs of the day

  • A foggy morning leads to a rainy autumn;
  • clear sky — for a cold and snowy winter;
  • leaves fall off without wind — next year will be fruitful.;
  • Strong wind — there will be little snow in winter;
  • A sunny day leads to a long and dry autumn;
  • rain — for rainy autumn and cold winter;
  • The birds fly south together — winter will come early.

What not to do on September 21

Autumn coincided in time with the Orthodox Nativity of the Virgin, therefore, on the holiday, the ancestors were sensitive to various prohibitions and beliefs. On this day, no one worked or did household chores, so as not to offend the Mother of God and anger Mother Earth.

  • Quarreling leads to troubles and misfortunes;
  • borrowing and lending money will lead to financial difficulties for the whole coming year;
  • Overeating and alcohol abuse can lead to illnesses and problems;
  • taking out the trash — you can "take away" luck and well-being from home;
  • Swearing and showing evil intentions is a sin.;
  • cutting bread with a knife — bread symbolizes the body of Christ;
  • talking about pregnancy in the early stages can make childbirth more difficult.

Church holiday on September 21

On September 21, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the twelve feasts. It is dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, and symbolizes the beginning of the salvation of mankind.

According to church tradition, Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna, had no children for a long time. In the Old Testament society, infertility was considered a punishment for sins, so spouses were ridiculed and humiliated. One day, during a great Jewish festival, the high priest refused to accept Joachim's sacrifice because he had not produced offspring. In despair, the saint retreated to the desert, where he prayed tirelessly. Finally, his crying was heard — an angel appeared and announced the imminent birth of his daughter Mary.

Prayers for September 21st

On the Nativity of the Virgin, believers visit churches and take part in solemn divine services. On this day, believers pray for the health of their relatives, the well-being of their children, help in difficult matters, and relief from grief.

Prayer for the Nativity of the Virgin

"O Most Holy Lady, God-chosen Mother of Christ our Saviour, begged of God through holy prayers, consecrated to God and beloved by God! Who won't please You or who won't sing Your Merry Christmas. For Thy Nativity was the beginning of the salvation of men, and we, who sit in the darkness of sins, see Thee, the dwelling place of Unapproachable Light. For this reason, a living language cannot praise You according to Your heritage. For thou art exalted above all Seraphim, O Most Pure One. Accept the present praise from Your unworthy servants, and do not reject our supplications. We confess Your greatness, we bow down to You in tenderness, and we ask your child-loving and diligent Mother to intercede boldly: beseech Your Son and our God to grant us, who sin many things, sincere repentance and a pious life, so that we may be able to do everything pleasing to God and useful to our souls. Let us hate all evil, strengthened by Divine grace in our good will. You are our shameless hope in the hour of death, grant us a Christian end, a comfortable procession through the terrible ordeals of the air, and a legacy of eternal and ineffable blessings of the Kingdom of Heaven, so that with all the saints we may unceasingly confess Your intercession for us and glorify the one True God, worshipped in the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen to that."
