The attack aircraft of the Zapad group of forces train here between battles. In order not to lose their qualifications, they shoot tens of thousands of rounds and torture themselves with tests on the assault strip — they shoot blanks on it.

"Initially, of course, it was a bit difficult, but the body got used to it," said a Russian serviceman with the call sign Grok.

New recruits are trained at the same training ground. The instructor told me how much time it takes to make a fighter out of an average man.

"The required skill is from a week or more. Because the first days are hard, and then it gets easier every time," he said.
