- FT has learned about the creation of the EU-Ukraine UAV alliance to support NATO's eastern flank
The European Commission (EC) has announced the creation of a "drone alliance" with Ukraine to protect NATO's eastern flank. This was reported on September 17 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
"Europe must build a wall of drones capable of responding in real time," the newspaper quoted EC President Ursula von der Leyen as saying.
According to the publication, the European Union (EU) calls for joint procurement and development of integrated systems based on Ukrainian innovations: acoustic sensors, mobile anti-aircraft groups and cheap interceptors.
"We are witnessing an iteration war, where both sides are improving drones and countermeasures," the article says.
At the same time, Poland, Lithuania and other countries are adopting the Ukrainian experience, and the NATO operation "Eastern Guard" provides temporary protection for the eastern flank. It is noted that a unified approach and joint technologies are critical for effective EU defense.
On September 12, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the launch of the Eastern Sentinel initiative to strengthen the defense of NATO member countries on the eastern flank after the drone incident in Poland. The operation will use elements aimed at solving special tasks related to the use of drones.
