The extension of the permit for the construction of the metro in St. Petersburg, contrary to alarming expectations, turned out to be a mere formality, and not a sign of new delays. According to the authorities and experts, the work has reached the finish line. This was reported by the Delovoy Peterburg newspaper on September 17.

The city has extended the permit for the construction of the first section of the Brown Metro Line. The document allows for construction from Yugo-Zapadnaya to Putilovskaya for another year — until the end of 2025. Despite the outwardly alarming signal, the construction committee and industry experts describe the situation as purely technical.

As explained in the construction committee, which oversees the development of the subway, the extension is solely due to changes in cadastral data on sections of the highway and does not indicate an actual postponement of the completion dates. Previously, the launch of these stations had already been postponed — they were originally planned to open last fall.

"They want to prepare the line properly in order to get permission for commissioning, without this the station will not be opened...> Previously, permission was sometimes given about 2-3 months after the opening. But now they don't do that, they finish it normally, so that everything is accepted, so that no problems arise when the station opens," says transport analyst Vladislav Bulgakov.

However, even after the start of traffic on the line, some work may continue. According to transport engineer Dmitry Baranov, the timing of the project was affected by a number of difficulties. Among them is the lack of its own depot for the new branch, which is why it is necessary to organize communication with other lines for the transfer of trains, as well as delays in the design of crossings between stations.

On August 28, the governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, in an interview with 78 TV channel, said that construction work at the Yugo-Zapadnaya and Putilovskaya stations themselves would be completed by the end of 2025. According to the data at the end of the same month, the readiness of the Yugo-Zapadnaya station was 90%.
