- Russian scientists will be the first in the world to create a BIM model of an ancient city in Iraq
Russian scientists using modern technologies and Russian software will be the first in the world to create a BIM model of an ancient city in Iraq. This became known on the eve of the next season of the Russian-Iraqi archaeological expedition, which starts in September.
The creation of a BIM model of the ancient city will create a new research environment and opportunities for exploring the ancient city without excavation in most of its territory. Scientists will have the opportunity to study ancient urbanism, urban relief, features of buildings and structures, and construction techniques. They will also be able to imagine the daily life and lifestyle of the Mesopotamian society that existed 3,500 years ago.
The digital model will be created based on BIM technology, which was developed at Severin development. A detailed city plan has already been created with a network of streets, a harbor, canals, and bridges.
"Excavations lead to the destruction of the cultural layer and the upper horizons of architectural structures. Modern archaeological practice is to dig when it is necessary to obtain dating material, in our case, cuneiform documents. A detailed digital model greatly facilitates the task of choosing the right sites where excavation work is essential," said Alexey Yankovsky—Dyakonov, head of the Russian-Iraqi expedition.
According to Dmitry Kesi, Director of the Department of Geodetic Control and Digital Change at Severin development, the creation of the world's first BIM model of an ancient city is a breakthrough that will provide a unique opportunity to compare modern approaches to planning and urban construction with those used in the ancient cradle of civilizations.
The city on Tell Dehaila was probably the capital of the still little-studied state of the Land of the Sea, which was located in the south of present-day Iraq in the 18th and 16th centuries BC. If the data obtained confirm the assumptions of the researchers, this city will become the first in the Maritime Dynasty, which will be able to turn the idea of this period and change the views on history.
