The Ministry of Education did not agree with the data of the Presidential Council for Human Rights (HRC) that from the 5th grade, the academic load on schoolchildren exceeds the maximum working week for adults - 40 hours. A representative of the ministry's press service told Vedomosti about this on September 15.

In the HRC report "Workload for schoolchildren: problems and solutions," the authors pointed out that from the 5th grade, the academic workload of schoolchildren can be 44 hours per week, which exceeds the maximum length of the working week for adults. It was clarified that the increase in the burden on schoolchildren is due, among other things, to the fact that part of extracurricular activities are conducted in the form of lessons.

The Ministry noted that the workload in grades 5-6 cannot exceed 30 hours, and in grades 7-11 — 35 hours. At the same time, the amount of extracurricular activities can reach ten hours per week for all students, but extracurricular activities should differ from regular lessons, the Ministry of Education added.

"Such an activity cannot be equated to an adult's working day," the ministry said.

Earlier, on September 12, the Ministry of Education approved that the maximum time to complete homework in all subjects for each class should not exceed 3.5 hours. It was clarified that these recommendations are coordinated with Rospotrebnadzor and take into account the age characteristics of students.
