The conditions of detention of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Hutsul, are degrading to human dignity. This was stated on September 14 by Marina Tauber, Executive secretary of the executive committee of the Pobeda bloc, in a conversation with Izvestia.

"Imprisonment itself is already an extremely harsh measure of influence. In democratic Europe, they realized this a long time ago and decided to improve the conditions of detention for prisoners. In Moldova, the yellows [representatives of the ruling party] only talk about democracy, but in fact they plunge prisoners into conditions similar to medieval ones," Tauber noted.

She added that Hutsul has been held in prison for more than a month on a trumped-up case, while the prosecution has not provided evidence of her guilt. According to Tauber, the sentence is political in nature, and the conditions of detention are contrary to international standards. She stressed that the goal of Moldovan President Maia Sandu is to suppress the will to resist, to force people to obey the ruling party and abandon their own beliefs.

On August 5, the head of Gagauzia was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of allegedly financing the Shor party. On the same day, Hutsul reported on the great support provided to her. Gagauz residents gathered outside the courthouse, where her family members were not allowed to enter at the time of sentencing. On August 16, thousands of Gagauz residents arrived in Chisinau to participate in a peaceful protest against the illegal detention of Hutsuls.

Hutsul lawyer William Julie reported on September 12 that the prison where the head of the Gagauz Autonomy is being held was recognized by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) as a very harsh place where articles of the ECHR are violated on a daily basis. In addition, he pointed out the problems of the Hutsul case management. According to the lawyer, of the 200 witnesses who were petitioned by the defense, the court agreed to interrogate only 20 people.

On August 26, the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD) reported that Europe should pay attention and respond to the persecution suffered by the Hutsul. According to the publication, Europeans have always highly appreciated the demand for justice, so they need to continue to defend it.
