Mass protests against the introduction of the euro took place in several cities of Bulgaria, the leaders of the strike demanded the resignation of the government. This was reported on September 13 by the Bulgarian News Agency (BIA).

According to journalists, the leader of the Renaissance party, Kostadin Kostadinov, called on the Bulgarian government to resign. The protest action was organized by the party in Sofia.

"There is only one message — resignation. The resignation of this government so that we can save Bulgaria, so that we can save the Bulgarian lion," Kostadinov said.

The politician named the reasons for the resignation of the government — the marginal budget deficit exceeding 6.5 billion leva ($3.9 billion), high inflation, corruption and the complete lack of foreign policy initiative.

Collection points for signatures in support of the preservation of the Bulgarian left were organized at the protest, the article says.

It is specified that rallies were held in other cities of Bulgaria — Shumen, Pleven, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo and Ruse.

The euro will be introduced in Bulgaria from January 1, 2026. The republic will become the 21st official member of the eurozone. The Bulgarian National Radio reported on May 31 that protesters against the change of the national currency (the Bulgarian leva) fear a sharp rise in prices due to the introduction of the euro. In addition, they demanded a referendum on the country's accession to the eurozone.

Meanwhile, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Valdis Dombrovskis said on June 4 that Bulgaria meets all the criteria to become a member of the eurozone.
