Hyundai and Kia became the most stolen car brands in Russia in 2025
In the first eight months of 2025, the number of car thefts in Russia increased by 6% compared to the same period last year. Hyundai and Kia became the most stolen cars. This is evidenced by the study of the VSK Insurance House, which was reviewed by Izvestia.
Analysts have found that Hyundai and Kia cars account for 17% of the hijackings. Lexus cars took the second place — the number of such thefts was 14%. They are followed by Lada cars, which account for 11% of the hijackings. Toyota and Mitsubishi shared the fourth place with 8% each. Mercedes-Benz closes the top five most stolen cars, thefts of which accounted for 5.7% of the total. The Lexus LX SUV became the most stolen car model — 8% of criminals paid attention to it.
The share of Chinese brands in the total hijacking rate increased to 8.5%. Last year, there were 3% of stolen cars during the same period. According to statistics, Chery and LIXIANG cars are most often stolen — approximately 3% of insurance claims for each brand of the total number of thefts were recorded.
The geography of crimes has also changed. If Moscow and Dagestan were the leaders in anti—rating in January–August 2024, then in the first eight months of 2025, the largest number of insurance events were recorded in the capital (28%), St. Petersburg (20%) and Krasnodar Territory (11%). Dagestan, Tatarstan, Kemerovo, Rostov, Bryansk, Ryazan, Tver and Yaroslavl regions, as well as Khabarovsk Territory account for about 2.8% of the hijackings.
According to experts, 34% of the hijackings occur between 07:00 and 11:00, another 26% — from 00:00 to 06:00.
Experts from Avtospeccenter Group of Companies reported on July 4 that cars with modern immobilizers and telematics are the least popular among hijackers. According to the Russian Interior Ministry, Hyundai and Kia were most often stolen in 2024, while Mazda, Volkswagen and premium Chinese cars such as Exeed and Tank remained less attractive to kidnappers.
