Rubens painting, lost 400 years ago, was accidentally found in Paris.
The painting by Peter Paul Rubens, painted in the first quarter of the 17th century, "Christ on the Cross" was accidentally discovered in one of the mansions in Paris. This was reported on September 10 by the Franceinfo TV channel.
The masterpiece, which is believed to have been created in 1613, was found by French auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osen, who is the director of the Osenat auction house back in September 2024.
"This is a masterpiece, "Christ on the Cross," <...> I found in September 2024 during the inventory and sale of a mansion in the 6th arrondissement of Paris," Haussen's comment to Agence France-Presse (AFP) is quoted in the publication.
The auction house's Instagram page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) states that the work will be shown to the public for purchase on November 30, 2025.
On August 25, the newspaper Het Parool reported the discovery of the painting "Portrait of a Lady", the author of which was previously the Italian artist Vittore Giuseppe Ghislandi and which was stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War. The canvas was found in the hotel of the daughter of one of the high-ranking officials of the Wehrmacht.
