The Pentagon will significantly reduce the cost of maintaining the combat readiness of American troops in Europe. This follows from the official budget documents of the department, which were reviewed by RIA Novosti on September 10.

According to the materials, in 2026, funding for the Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 (APS-2) program, designed to provide armament depots, will be reduced by almost 15 times compared to 2023. This is the fourth consecutive cost reduction for this program. In 2023, about $495 million was allocated for APS-2, and by 2026 this amount will fall to $33.4 million.

It is clarified that the decision is due to the Pentagon's directive on the elimination of outdated programs, the priority of high-tech developments and the transfer of APS-2 to the "maintenance" mode. The overall reduction in spending on the APS program from 2023 to 2026 reflects Washington's reorientation from Europe to the Pacific region.

On September 5, Politico reported on the Pentagon's new priority in the form of internal protection of the country from threats. It was noted that the changes affected the draft of the new national defense strategy of the United States.
