- A detachment of ships of the Northern Fleet landed troops on the archipelago of Franz Josef Land
A detachment of warships of the Northern Fleet, led by the large anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, which performs the tasks of a long-range cruise in the Arctic Ocean, conducted a tactical amphibious landing exercise on the unequipped coast of the Arctic island. The exercise was held on the island of Alexandra Land in the Franz Josef Land archipelago. This was announced on September 10 by the press service of the Northern Fleet.
According to the terms of the exercise, the Northern Fleet force group had to recapture the bridgehead captured by illegal armed groups and ensure the landing of amphibious troops. The imaginary enemy was designated by the personnel of the tactical group of the coastal forces of the Northern Fleet stationed on the island.
A group to combat underwater sabotage forces and assets of a detachment of warships of the Northern Fleet carried out a covert landing from high-speed boats to conduct reconnaissance on the Arctic coast.
The training battle began with an artillery strike on the identified positions of the "enemy" by calculations of the AK-100 naval guns of the large anti-submarine ship Severomorsk. Then a Marine Corps unit was deployed to the coast by a Ka-27 deck helicopter.
After preparing a position for the landing of equipment and amphibious troops on the unequipped coast, a large amphibious assault ship Alexander Otrakovsky approached the coastline. The UR-77 self-propelled rocket launcher and two-link all-terrain vehicles with marines landed from the ship's twin deck.
As part of the exercise, military personnel of the separate marine engineering regiment of the Northern Fleet completed the task of making a passage through mine-explosive barriers using the UR-77 self-propelled rocket launcher.
The North Sea warriors launched a surprise attack on units of illegal armed formations, worked out the elements of conducting raid operations, marched and entered the designated area.
According to preliminary estimates, all personnel involved in the exercise demonstrated a high level of combat training and qualitatively worked out tactics of joint actions during the battle for amphibious landings on the unequipped coast in the Arctic.
On September 5, Alexey Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, said at the Arctic: Information Policy session on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum 2025 (WEF 2025) that the Northern Fleet is a world leader and Russia's shield in the Arctic. He also stressed the importance of the Arctic as an economic and geopolitical region.
