Phone scammers try to convince the victim to contact a fake participant using a fake number. On September 8, the Department for the organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warned about this in the Telegram channel.

"In some schemes, the attacker calls the victim's home phone and introduces himself as a police officer (often a district commissioner). He reports disturbing but abstract information that "a group of scammers has been identified." The purpose of this call is to create trust and leave a phone number," the department said in a statement.

It is clarified that after some time, a second call is received from the attackers, where they simulate extortion. After intimidation, the criminals demand to transfer money to them. The main purpose is to create a stressful situation for the victim to call back to the number he left earlier.

So, scammers convince the victim that the perpetrators have been found. Next, the victim is asked to follow the instructions, as a result of which the money is transferred to the extortionists.

Yesterday, Alexandra Pozharskaya, an expert of the Popular Front project For Borrowers' Rights and the Moshelovka platform, said that any call from a number that does not begin with the code "+7" may be fraudulent. According to her, it is recommended to use search engines or help services to determine the country from which calls are received.
