NA announced Japan's introduction of Starlink into the Coast Guard
Japanese Coast Guard ships will begin using Space X's Starlink satellite service to expand their communication capabilities. This was reported on September 7 by the Nikkei Asia (NA) newspaper.
"The plan is for 66 large patrol ships to enter service in fiscal year 2025 <...> and 16 more ships next year. These ships patrol the waters near the Japanese—controlled Senkaku Islands," the publication says.
The Japanese Coast Guard will allocate 4.26 billion yen for the installation of the Starlink service to improve its communication system, introduce communication equipment with improved encryption capabilities, and conduct cyberattack research.
It is noted that the availability of several satellite communication options will provide the self-defense forces with the ability to maintain means of communication even in emergency situations.
Earlier, on May 25, it was reported that the Japanese Coast Guard was firing without warning. The patrol boat "Kawagiri", without first warning, carried out shooting near the island of Kunashir.
