A beautiful smile is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also an essential component of health. Many adults believe that the time to correct an overbite is irretrievably lost in childhood, but modern dentistry proves the opposite. On September 5, dentist and orthodontist Farit Kadyrov told Izvestia what orthodontics is and why bite correction is important at any age.

"Orthodontics is an extensive branch of dentistry that deals with the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental position anomalies and malocclusion. It is important to note that orthodontics deals not only with treatment, but also with prevention. This means that many problems can be foreseen and prevented even in childhood," he said.

According to him, there are clear criteria that determine the correct (physiological) occlusion, which ensures the harmonious functioning of the entire maxillary system.

Correcting overbite in adulthood is necessary not only for the sake of a beautiful smile, but also, first of all, for the sake of health. Crowding of teeth makes hygiene difficult, which leads to plaque accumulation, caries development and gum inflammation (gingivitis, periodontitis). Some malocclusion disorders make it difficult to chew food properly, which puts a strain on the digestive system. In addition, uneven load distribution leads to excessive abrasion of the enamel of individual teeth.

"Malocclusion is one of the common causes of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, which is manifested by headaches, clicks and pain in the joint area," the doctor added.

There is a persistent myth that orthodontic treatment is exclusively for children and adolescents, and after 25-30 years it is too late to change anything. The dentist assures: this is a profound misconception — age is not a contraindication for orthodontic treatment.

"For adult patients, aesthetics of treatment often comes first. Fortunately, today there is a choice: various braces, aligners (mouthguards)," Kadyrov said.

It is widely believed that aligners work faster. This is partly true, but not because technology moves teeth "faster". The fact is that aligners are more often used to treat mild and moderate cases, which by definition require less time. Complex pathologies, which are more effectively treated with braces, require longer wearing of the equipment. If the initial situation is the same, the treatment time on braces and aligners will be approximately comparable.

On July 16, Olga Albova, a dentist at the Dentistoff clinic, named the cause of bleeding gums when brushing her teeth. As the expert explained, the main cause of bleeding is plaque, which accumulates pathogens.
