The German steel industry is in a difficult position. This was announced on September 4 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference of the ruling coalition of Germany on reforms.

"The German steel industry is in a difficult situation, which may have been somewhat sidelined by the discussion on duties, and is not receiving enough attention," Merz said.

According to him, the United States continues to impose extremely high duties on the steel and aluminum industries. Merz also promised to invite industry companies and trade unions to the steel summit. He called the goal of maintaining steel production in Germany in the long term.

"We have a very strong supplier manufacturing industry in Germany, which, however, is currently seriously affected by the crisis that has engulfed the automotive industry as a whole," Merz added.

Earlier, on August 27, it became known about the possible reduction of about 20% of jobs in Germany in the field of mechanical engineering amid the employment crisis. It was clarified that every fifth workplace is under threat.

On July 31, the deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Sepp Muller, said that the German economy had lost competitiveness. He noted that the government intends to cover the budget deficit of 172 billion euros expected by 2029 by reducing the number of civil servants by 8% and material costs by 10%.
