- FT has learned about the lack of unity of opinion among the EU on sending military personnel to Ukraine
In the European Union (EU), there is uncertainty about sending troops to Ukraine ahead of the negotiations of the "coalition of the willing" on the presence of foreign peacekeepers. This was reported on September 4 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.
"But there is uncertainty about what contribution individual EU members are willing to make.<... > The coalition is divided into approximately three groups: one, including Great Britain [node:summary]Italy, is ready to deploy troops, the other has decided to abandon this, for example, Italy, and the majority is still undecided, for example, Germany," the article says.
The publication notes that the deployment of a military contingent in the country is a "central element of security guarantees" from the "coalition of the willing" led by France and the United Kingdom.
Also, after the meeting of the coalition of the willing, which will take place on September 4, European leaders intend to contact US President Donald Trump and report on the discussions.
The day before, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the "coalition of willing" to provide military support to the country looks "theoretical so far." At the same time, he noted that he believes in this coalition.
European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen announced on August 31 that European countries are developing a specific plan for a possible military presence in Ukraine after the conflict ends, which will be fully supported by the capabilities of the United States.
On August 23, Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that the deployment of German troops in Ukraine would be a fatal mistake and would not contribute to achieving peace. As she clarified, the European Union (EU) is turning itself into a target, while the United States is withdrawing from this conflict.
