15 people were killed when a funicular derailed in Lisbon.
The cabin of the famous funicular Elevator da Gloria, which transports hundreds of tourists and locals every day, derailed and overturned. 15 people were killed and 18 injured, including five in serious condition. This was reported on September 3 by the newspaper Correio da Manha.
Rescuers are working at the scene, trying to extract people trapped in damaged equipment. The causes of the accident have not yet been determined.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He noted that he "regrets the accident, the deaths and serious injuries, and hopes that the incident will be promptly clarified by the competent authorities."
The incident was not the first in the history of the funicular: in 2018, due to maintenance problems, it also derailed, but then there were no casualties.
Earlier, on August 30, it was reported about a train derailment in Egypt. Two people were killed and more than 50 injured. It was clarified that the Mersa Matrukh Health Department had introduced an emergency regime in all hospitals. The authorities sent dozens of ambulances to the scene for emergency transportation of the injured.
