The State Duma offered to replace the license plate without tricolor for free.
The State Duma has offered to replace state automobile registration plates that do not have the Russian tricolor with those with the flag image for free. This initiative was made by the head of the Fair Russia — For Truth faction, Sergei Mironov, who sent a letter to Rosstandart, RIA Novosti reported on September 3.
The parliamentarian is confident that the free replacement of license plates will ensure a complete unification of the appearance of registration plates. The initiative will also "reduce the number of disputes and risks for bona fide car owners, as well as help curb the turnover of duplicates that do not meet the updated standard."
GOST, which provides for the mandatory presence of the Russian tricolor on automobile license plates from 2025, was adopted by order of Rosstandart in November 2024.
On December 28 last year, car lawyer Sergey Radko pointed out that if the car was registered after January 1, 2025 and the car owner produced plates without a mandatory flag on them, then driving this car would be considered driving a vehicle with non-standard plates. According to Part 1 of Article 12.2 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, this violation is punishable by a warning or a fine of 500 rubles, the lawyer emphasized.
