New car sales in Russia decreased by 18% in August

By the end of August 2025, 122.2 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 17.6% less than in the last summer month of last year. This is stated in the message of the analytical agency Autostat, which was received by Izvestia on September 3.

Lada retains its leadership in the Russian market with a huge advantage, accounting for less than a quarter (22.6%) of the total volume (27.6 thousand cars sold) at the end of the summer.

Haval regained the title of the most popular foreign brand, with cars selling 16,000 units in August. Chery dropped to the third place in the overall standings (11.1 thousand units), followed by Geely (8.7 thousand units), the agency calculated.

For the first time, the fifth place was taken by the Belarusian Belgee with an indicator of 7.8 thousand cars. Changan (7 thousand units), Jetour (4.5 thousand units), Solaris (3.7 thousand units), Toyota (3 thousand units) and Omoda (3 thousand units) also made the top ten. The last time Toyota reached the top ten was last October.

Six of the 10 leading brands showed negative dynamics in August. At the same time, Geely sank the most (-40.1%), and Haval was the least critical (-13.6%). Among the brands showing growth, Belgee distinguished itself (by 2.2 times). Jetour's sales grew the least (+21.1%).

In total, 773.3 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia from January to August (-23% YoY). Positive dynamics was recorded for the same four brands, of which Solaris was the strongest (an increase of 2.2 times). Geely and Omoda are doing worse than others, with the same drop (-45.6%), analysts said.

Earlier, on August 28, it became known that the leader of the rating of the most popular crossovers in the Russian secondary market for the first seven months of 2025 is the Toyota RAV4, excluding the VAZ Niv in the SUV segment.

On August 27, it was reported that over the past 10 years, the number of passenger cars in Russia has increased by 8.7 million units and reached 53 million. Back in 2022, there were 50.6 million cars in the country.
