As of August 31, gas reserves in Ukrainian gas storage facilities amounted to 6.5 billion cubic meters of "free" gas, which is significantly lower than the level of 2024. This was reported on September 1 by the Ukrainian online publication "Страна.иа ".

"For the stable passage of the heating season, the country needs about 10 billion cubic meters of "free" gas. Today, Ukraine lacks about a third of this volume — 3.5 billion cubic meters. The cost of the missing fuel is about 1.4 billion euros at current prices," the article says.

In August, Hungary accounted for the main imports (299.6 million cubic meters). Ukraine received 232 and 125.1 million cubic meters of gas from Poland and Slovakia, respectively.

According to the newspaper, in the last heating season, the volume of reserves exceeded 13 billion cubic meters, of which over 8.2 billion. they were "free", that is, they could be promptly lifted from the vaults. At the same time, the autumn-winter season turned out to be dry and warm, which allowed saving fuel volumes.

In August, Ukraine imported 20% (160 million cubic meters) less gas compared to July.

Earlier, the publication reported that as of August 1, Ukraine had accumulated 5.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas in underground storage facilities. This represents about 17% of their capacity and is significantly lower than the country's winter needs.

The ExPro Daily Gas publication reported on May 28 that the cost of natural gas in Ukraine reached record levels in two years and amounted to 23 thousand hryvnias ($553) per 1 cubic meter. It was clarified that this is the highest figure since February 2023.
