At a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump realized that declaring a truce was not enough to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, the problem was much deeper. This was announced on September 1 by Karin Kneissl, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria, head of the St. Petersburg State University's G.O.R.K.L. Center.

"It was interesting that President Trump in his subsequent statements, both to journalists and at a meeting at the White House, noted that (in Ukraine — Ed.) it is necessary to achieve comprehensive peace. It's not enough to just declare a truce," she said in an interview with TASS.

Kneissl expressed confidence that a truce is not a solution and it "would only lead to a further freeze, as is the case with many other frozen conflicts since the 1990s."

"In other words, declaring a truce is not a solution. And President Trump also conveyed this to his European guests and to [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky," the ex-minister concluded.

The meeting between Putin and Trump took place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. According to its results, the Russian leader noted the desire of his colleague from the United States to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. In turn, Trump said that the negotiations went very well, and called the summit in Alaska wonderful.

On August 19, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that Russia was not abandoning any negotiation formats on Ukraine, either bilateral or trilateral. Moscow is interested in a serious, expert-level approach, starting from which it is possible to go through all the necessary steps step by step to prepare for the next summits, he said.

Later, on August 26, Trump said that his visit to Alaska showed Putin's willingness to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The American leader added that he "really appreciated" the actions of the Russian leader.
