Over the last weekend of summer, 740 road accidents occurred on Russian roads, in which 83 people were killed and 942 injured. 72 of the dead were passengers and drivers. This was reported to Izvestia on September 1 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

26 accidents involving buses were recorded, in which two people were killed, and 39 more road users, including three children, needed medical help. Six bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by their drivers.

So, in the Stavropol Territory, in the early morning on 12 km of the federal highway R-217 Kavkaz, a 24-year-old driver of an intercity bus carrying 10 passengers fell asleep at the wheel and collided with a truck traveling in the same direction. One of the bus passengers was killed in the accident, and the culprit of the collision and four other passengers were hospitalized with injuries.

As a result of 118 road accidents, 35 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 83 outside their area of operation, 11 pedestrians were killed, 114 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 29 young pedestrians, while 20 of them were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places.

128 accidents involving minors were registered, in which 155 young road users were injured, including 91 passengers, 9 cyclists and 21 motor transport drivers. Four children were killed, all of whom were passengers of the vehicles. At the same time, the cause of death of two of them was also sleep at the wheel of their parents who were transporting them.

For example, in the Arkhangelsk region, on 778 km of the M-8 Kholmogory federal highway (Moscow — Yaroslavl — Vologda — Arkhangelsk), a 43-year-old passenger car driver drove into the oncoming lane in a prohibited place, where he collided with another passenger car. As a result of the accident, the passenger of the second car was killed, as well as the six-year-old daughter of the culprit of the collision, who was in the back seat in a child restraint. Another passenger of this vehicle and both drivers ended up in the hospital, having been injured.

In Kalmykia, on 145 km of the Yashkul—Komsomolsky—Artesian regional highway in the morning, a 45-year-old SUV driver, returning home to Torzhok with his family after a two-week vacation in Dagestan, drove into oncoming traffic, where he crashed into a truck. The driver of the car and his two passengers were killed in the collision, including his 11-year-old daughter, who was wearing a seat belt in the back seat at the time of the incident. Two more passengers of the SUV were hospitalized.

In the Kaluga Region, in the afternoon, a 13-year-old schoolboy without a driver's license lost control of a regional highway while riding a moped and collided with a passenger car, driving into the oncoming lane. His 11-year-old passenger, who was traveling on a scooter without a helmet and protective equipment, died in the accident. The young motor transport driver himself was injured and was hospitalized.

According to operational data from the State Traffic Inspectorate, in August 2025, 2,269 road accidents involving minors under the age of 16 occurred in the Russian Federation, in which 71 children were killed and 2,547 injured.

One of the main reasons for the increase in accidents among underage drivers is the lack of proper adult supervision, the department noted. Parents often purchase equipment for their children themselves, such as mopeds or so-called pit bikes, which are prohibited from driving on public roads, forgetting to explain to them the basic rules of travel. In addition, the legal age for driving a particular vehicle is often ignored.

A driver's license with an open category "M" is required to operate a moped and scooter. You can get it after studying at a driving school from the age of 16. At the same time, it is possible to travel on a moped on public roads only in a motorcycle helmet, provided that you have perfect command of the technique of driving such vehicles.

For driving a moped, scooter, motorcycle, or car without the appropriate license, a fine of 5 to 15 thousand rubles is provided, while the vehicle is delayed and placed in a specialized parking lot. In addition, the fine for transferring the right to drive a vehicle to a child is 30 thousand rubles. Their parents or legal representatives will be responsible for teenagers under the age of 16 who were driving vehicles.

"Do not leave the keys to cars and motor vehicles for children, thereby allowing the possibility of a dangerous trip. Adults should constantly monitor the leisure time of schoolchildren, especially in the evening, in order to avoid the possibility of road accidents involving them," said Police Colonel Anton Belan, Deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child Traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Earlier, on August 31, it was reported that residents of Moscow, the Moscow region and the Republic of Dagestan most often violated traffic rules in 2024.
