Von der Leyen announced the EU's "clear plan" for the deployment of troops in Ukraine
European countries are developing a specific plan for a possible military presence in Ukraine after the end of the conflict, which will be fully supported by the capabilities of the United States. This was announced on August 31 by the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.
"Security guarantees are of paramount and crucial importance, <...> we have a clear roadmap and we have reached an agreement at the White House. <...> This work is progressing very well," she said in an interview with the Financial Times (FT).
The publication suggested that tens of thousands of European troops will form the basis of the troops, while receiving comprehensive support from the United States, covering both command and control systems, as well as intelligence and surveillance tools.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on August 31 that no one in the West was currently discussing the possible deployment of ground troops to Ukrainian territory. It was clarified that the issue of security guarantees for Kiev boils down to providing support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and is an "absolute priority."
